Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon

Seductive aromatic notes of toasted walnut, dried red fruits, spice, cocoa and marshmallow. Flavors of dark chocolate, chocolate covered almond, coffee, tobacco and dark caramel. The finish is smooth, silky, toffee sweet and honeyed.

This bourbon is produced in Frankfort, Kentucky, and is aged for an unspecified period of time in new, charred American oak barrels. This bourbon’s base distillate is Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #2. The liquor is housed in a distinctive decanter that has been exquisitely engraved with images of horses, trees, and a barn. The glass stopper gives the whole thing a classy finishing touch. This bourbon’s MSRP is in the $50–$60 range. Prices, however, can differ according to stock levels and demand in the aftermarket. It is 100 proof when it is bottled.

One of the sub-labels of Buffalo Trace/Sazerac, an upscale beverage served in a posh decanter that seems to be particularly popular because it features a horse on the label, is Rock Hill Farms.

Rock Hill Farms is a very typical example of Buffalo Trace’s house style, a rye-heavy bourbon that is nicely spiced from beginning to end (bottled without an age statement or any other manufacturing information).Orange peel, oily furniture polish, and a ton of nutty sherry (or sherried nuts? ) dominate the aroma. With additional time, a winey, Port-like flavour with hints of dried cherries, raisins, and cloves emerges. On the taste, many of the same flavors are still present, but they have a somewhat bitter edge and are joined by more exotic flavors like candied walnuts, allspice, and dried papaya.

Overall, it’s a great example of bonded-style bourbon, however ardent bourbon connoisseurs could find it too similar.
